MC5 – Kick Out The Jams!
Posted by vrocks | Filed under DVD, Pop, Punk, rock
Kick Out the Jams features many never before seen films of the MC5 as created by Leni Sinclair & conceptual artist Cary Loren during the peak of their career. Tracks include: “Kick Out The Jams,” “Come Together,” “Looking At You,” and more. Bonus footage includes a wild interview with MC5 manager/agitator/activist John Sinclair.
Thirty-five minutes of pure pre-punk mayhem comprise this compilation of rare footage of the Motor City 5 from the late-1960s. Emerging at the tail-end of the hippy movement, the MC5 were notorious for the raw energy and politicized anarchy of their shows, all of which comes through on this collection of silent footage, which was shot by the band’s manager, Leni Sinclair, as well as conceptual artist Cary Loren. The sometimes-chaotic scenes have been set to music in an approximation to a concert film that is more like an art piece, which is entirely appropriate given the subject matter. The documentary opens with singer Rob Tyner yelling a familiar mantra to the crowd, and the excitement doesn’t let up for the duration of the film, as the band play the hits, including “Looking at You,” “Want You Right Now,” and, of course “Kick Out the Jams.”

I love this film too. It really shows the wildness of the late 60′s to a tee! I got to see them play 2 times but both in Ann Arbor. I was too young to get into the Grande during the 5′s heyday. Leni and Cary will enjoy your story and I will post it on FB for them to see. Thanks for keeping the 5 ALIVE!

Thanks for your comments about the film. I must clarify that ALL the footage was shot by Leni Sinclair. I simply edited the footage and helped with the production. The sound was provided from previously released live bootlegs.

Cary, thanks for the comment. You & Leni are making a tremendous legacy for all the young man out, and that’s including me. Without this DVD maybe we never know what would MC5 look like on stage. With all everything captured on the DVD, we could imagine how it feels to be on those era.
